SCHOOL COMMITTEE.

The ordinary meeting of the local State School Committee was held on Thursday evening. Present: Messrs Hornblow (chairman), Betty, Geo. Barber, Franklapd, Hunt, Hussey and Alex. Speirs. An apology for absence was received from Mr G. Coley. Correspondence was read and received from the Education Board re insurance of caretaker, part payment of sanitary service, re application for grant for conveying children across the river. From the head teacher, thanking the committee for the purchase and payment of drum. The Board also wrote in reply to a request that the architect should inspect the building and report re chimneys and roof, that the matter had been reierred to Mr Fraser.

The chairman explained that he had received a letter from Messrs Watt Bros, re conveying the children resident at the Beach to the school. This firm undertakes to convey the children to and from the Beach at 9b per head, and 6d per head over twelve iu number. The chairman had communicated with Mrs Eawlon on the subject, who had stated that at present there were eight children ot school age for whom locomotion would be required. This was the minimum number at present. After discussion, it was decided to forward the information obtained to the Board, together with Messrs Watt Bros’, letter.

The Board forwarded the application form and testimonials of Mr H. A. Shane, whom it proposes to temporarily appoint as third assistant, vice Miss Smith resigned. The Committee authorised tbe chairman to suggest to the Board that, as Mr Shane’s appointment was apparently only temporary, that the services of the present relieving teacher, Miss Moore, be retained until a permanent male teacher is appointed. The visitors reported everything satisfactory. The head teacher reported that the attendance continues to he very satisfactory. The averages for the past ton wi-eks were 302.8, 314.8, 3-3.8, 312. The average lor the whole period was 3io'S, out of an average roll number ol 336. The second term holidays commence on Monday, September 2nd, and the school re-opens on Monday, September 9th. The second term examination is iu progress, and the results are generally satisfactory. Mr Banner, supervisor for agriculture, visited the school last Tuesday.— The report was received. Accounts were passed for payment.

Owing to Mr Henderson’s absence, tbe question cf school ground levelling was hell over.

Messrs Barber and Bpeirs were appointed visitors for the month.
