SUPREME COURT.

The Supreme Court sittings opened at Palmerston North yesterday before Mr Justice Chapman. The grand jury returned a true bills in the case against Vincent O’Neill and Howard Webby (alleged assault) ; Hingawatu Tuparoa (indecent assault) ; Charles Henry Smith (sheep stealing) ; and Benjamin Kay (carnal knowledge).

Vincent O’Neill and Howard Webby pleaded not guilty to three alternative counts in respect to an illegal assault upon John Stalker, at Palmerston, on June rolh, namely (1) assault with intent to cause bodily harm, (2) assault resulting in bodily barm, and (3) assault. Alter hearing evidence the jury returned a verdict of guilty against O’Neill with a strong recommendation to mercy. The judge sentenced the accused to three mouths' imprisonment. A verdict ot not guilty was returned against Webby.
