Miss Marie Haines will pay a return visit to Foxton early in September. Mr Byron Brown won the Shakespereau recital for men at the Napier competitions yesterday. Mr A. Astbury, a farmer of Mangaloki, will probably be selected as the Liberal Candidate for the Egmout seat. Lawrence Cagill was seriously injured by au explosion at Bealey Flat on Monday, and died on his way to the Otira Hospital. The death took place at Wellington, yesterday, of T. G. Macarthy, the well-known brewer, at the age of 79 years. A sharp shock of earthquake, preceded by a loud rumbling noise, was experienced in this district at about 6.20 this morning. Mr Metcalfe, civil engineer, of Messrs Metcalfe and Sous, Auckland, visited Foxtou to-day. Mr Metcalfe is at present supervising the Woodville and Waipawa drainage schemes.
The President ot the local Horticultural Society has given a trophy for the best cottage garden, which will be judged in connection with the spring show. This is open to all. To-night, in the Presbyterian Hall, a social and competition evening will be given by the Ladies’ Guild. A capital programme has been arranged, and the competition will create a good deal of, interest. Refreshments will be provided. Mr A. K. Lougworth, ot Foxton, officiated as judge of the vocal items at the Shannon Methodist competitions on Saturday. Miss Signal won the sacred solo competition, and Mrs Hall was second. Mr Yates won the comic song competition. The concert in All Saints’ schoolroom, to be held on Tuesday, the 27th instant, promises to be very attractive. A number of new items will be given, and one feature of the evening will be a fencing match between two trained swordsmen. The members of the Manawalu County Council arrived by tram this morning and proceeded per motor cars to the Shannon bridge, where they will meet members of the Horowhenua County Council, and confer in respect to the upkeep ol the Shanuon-Foxton road. Full particulars ot the conference will appear in our next issue. Says the N.Z. Times:—“The two prisoners, Bergerson and Paul, who escaped from Point Halswell prison camp last week, are still at large. A special force of police is in search, and descriptions of the escapees have been placed in all the police stations throughout the country. It is believed that the men have succeeded in making their way into the bush country ot the Manawatu.’’ The annual meeting of the Foxton Racing Club will be held in the Council Chamber this evening, when the annual report and balance sheet will be presented, and officers elected. The following gentlemen have been nominated as stewards, of whom seven are required : —Messrs Dr Mandl, J. Burr, Geo. Coley, F. S. Easton, Geo. Farmer, R. Hynes, C. Hunt, H. S. Hammond, and H. Stunnell.
A telegram was received by the Hon. W. F. Massey (Prime Minister) last evening advising that a million acres ot country in the Nortn Canterbury and South Marlborough district was under snow. The message added that for nearly five weeks past 100,000 sheep have been under snow, and very few are expected to come out alive from their sufferings. The position is regarded as very serious for tarmers in the Amuii district.
