LOCAL JOCKEY DISgUALI FI HU FOR ONE YEAR.

Some sensation was caused some time before the Grand National Hurdles by the locally trained horse, The Rover’s number being taken off the board, this siguityiug that the favourite was scratched. Since he won the Jumpers’ Flat Race, the gelding had become a hot favourite, aud at the eleventh hour there was a rush to “hedge” on him. The climax came when he was scratched un the course. The stewards held au euqutry, but, after examining C. Price, who was in charge of the horse, an adjournamenl was made till yesterday. It appears (says the Dominion) that Mr T. H. Simpson, the lessor of the horse, stipulated iu the agreement to lease that The Rover was not to race over fences. This has been known for some time, but it was given out that a new lease was in course of preparation. A lesser commotion occurred when it was found that VV. Youug was not to ride The Native, First of all M’Flynn was engaged, but theu C. Price was substituted, and Young’s services were secured for Paisauo, la each case the boys who stood down were paid losing tees. After the race the stewards held au inquiry iuto the jostling of Paisauo by The Native. After a lengthy hearing, the stewards disqualified C. Price, rider of The iNative, tor twelve months, aud awarded the race to Waterworks. Opinions are divided on the merits 01 the case.

The news of Pnce’sdisqualification was received with much regret locally, as he was looked upon as one ot the Dominion's first-class horsemen, and the penalty imposed is a severe one. Seeing that this month is the commencement ol lhe racing season, Price’s disqualification will mean a great loss to him, and unless it is removed before the twelve mouths expires, he will lose a whole racing season. The Dominion’s statement that The Rover is the property ot Mr T. H, Simpson is incorrect, as the horse is owned by Mr Martin lioyle, ot Taikorea, and has been leased to Mr A. M. Wiighl Irotu the commencement ot his racing career.
