A SERIOUS OFFENCE.
Christchurch, Aug. 16. Bridget Chalk, a middle aged woman, was charged that on May 17th, at Kaiapoi, she did by an unlawful act which she knew, or ought to have known, to be likely to cause death, by performing an illegal operation on Martha Henderson, cause the death of Martha Henderson and did thereby commit murder.
A verdict of manslaughter was returned, with a strong recommendation to mercy on accouuo f the prisoner’s age. A sentence oi eight years was passed.
