WATER AND DRAINAGE.

ANOTHER POLL TO BE

TAKEN

At last night’s Council meeting 23 replies were received from rate • payers in Main Street to the Council's circular letter in connection with the proposed Main Street fire prevention scheme. Not one was favourable to the scheme, but a number signified their willingness to support a water and drainage proposal. Cr Adams moved that in view of the fact that several ratepayers in the Main Street have expressed their desire oi favouring a water and drainage proposal at the same time as providing for fire prevention, that the ratepayers as a whole be given a chance of ex» pressing their opinion on the matter of the above proposal by taking a poll ol ratepayers on the artesian water supply and drainage proposal. Cr Whibley seconded the motion.

Cr Adams said he understood that a poll would only cost £$ or £6 and as it was only going to cost such a small sum it was only right that the ratepayers should be given another opportunity of voting on the question. Some of the Councillors were in favour of waiting until the gasworks were a paying concern, but he contended that the opportunity of voting should be given now and then if the proposal was lost the matter could again be brought forward when there was no necessity to collect a gas rale. Cr Stewart contended that it was only ttirowing money away to take a pull at the present juncture. Tne general opinion was against the scheme as the rates were too high even now.

Cr Speirs said the motion had his sympathy and he would be only too pleased to support the scheme, Iml at present the time was uot opportune t" p i the proposal belore the ratepayers. Cr Coley referred to the amount allowed for upkeep in Mr Climie’s report which he considered absolutely inadequate. Cr Whibley said a number of the Councillors appeared to have discussed this matter with different ratepayers and been informed that they were opposed to it. He also had interviewed various ratepayers and all of these were in idvom of the scheme.

Cr Cbrystall thought it was only fair for the ratepayers to have another opportunity of voting on the question. On the previous occasion they were not sufficiently well informed and the proposal was consequently lost. The motion was put and carried, Crs Coley and Speirs only opposing it.

A BLACKSMITH’S OPINION. “Por severe colds, which gave me racking pains in the chest, I used Chamberlain’s Cough Remedy with the best results. It ends these colds in litde or no time and I do not think there is a better remedy on the market,” says Mr lohn McGrade, 154 Young St., Annandale, N.S.W. “1 give Chamberlain’s Cough Remedy to ray boy and girl for colds and croup and can say that it is an excellent remedy for children.” For sale everywhere.—Advt.
