THE FLAXMILLS UNION.

FEDERATION CANDIDATE

OUTED

The half-yearly meeting of the Manawatu Flaxmills Employees Union is being held at Palmerston North to-day, and commenced at xi o’clock.

Practically all the mills in the district closed down for the day. At the commencement of the meeting there was an attendance of about 150 members. Great interest was evinced in this meeting as it was felt that the tone of same would indicate whether the Union would continue under the Federation of Labour or cut adrift. This question had not been dealt with when an adjournment was made tor lunch, but some indication of the feeling of the meeting was given in the election of President in which one' of the candidates, J. R. Brown, was a strong supporter and advocate of the Federation of Labour. He was defeated by Gavin Stove, who has been acting-secretary for the past couple of months.

There were two candidates for the position of secretary, Messrs P. T. Robinson, who has held the office for some years, and G. A, Simpson, well-known in Foxtou, having occupied the Mayoral chair here for two terms. The election resulted as follows: — Robinson 82, Simpson 23.

Mr John Robertson, M.P., will address the meeting during the afternoon.
