SCHOOL COMMITTEE.
The monthly meeting of the local State school committee was held on Thursday night. Present: —Messrs Hornblow (chairman), Barber, Betty, Henderson, Hunt, Hussey, and Alex. Speirs. Apologies were received from Messrs Frank-land and Geo. Coley. Correspondence was received trom the Board re a side school at the Beach. The Board endorsed the Chief Inspector’s recommendation viz—that the applicants for the school and the Foxton committee be asked to endeavour to arrange for a conveyance with a view to an application being made to the Department tor a grant tor this purpose. —'The committee decided to act on the Board’s advice and the chairman and secretary were appointed to confer with the Beach residents on the subject and forward the necessary information to the Board. A letter was received from Miss Smith, third assistant, notifying the committee that she had tendered her resignation to the Board as from the end of the month. —The Chairman was authorised to write Miss Smith expressing the committee’s regret at losing her services and wishing her every happiness in the more importaui she is shortly to fill.
The evergreen subject of levelling the playground was again discussed and it was decided so soon as soil could be procured to start with the work. The work to be done a portion at a time.
The purchase of a ladder for the use of the caretaker was left in the hands of the Chairman, It was decided to ask the Board whether any provision was made for insuring the caretaker against accidents.
The visiting committee’s report was read and adopted. The Chairman’s action in authorising the purchase ot a better quality side drum at a total cost of odd was endorsed and the account lor same passed for payment.
The headteacher’s report for the month stated that the average attendances for the four weeks ended July 12th were : 309.2, 319, 3x7.x, 313.6. The average for the whole period was 314..7 out of an average roll number ot 336. This works out at 93 per cent- which must be considered highly satisfactory for this season 01 the year. The present roll number is 339. With the exception of one or two leaks, the school buildings are in a very satisfactory condition. The headteacher also enclosed a resolution from the Board secretary as follows : “I am directed by the Board to compliment you on the excellent condition ot your school as evidenced by the last report of the Inspector.” The committee expressed its pleasure at the satisfactory report received. It was decided to ask the Board to allow its architect to inspect the school building with a view to carrying out certain repairs.
Voting papers were nanded to committeemen in respect to the election of a member for the Southern Ward. Messrs Hunt and Hussey were appointed visitors for the month.
A number ol accounts were passed for payment and the meeting rose.
