WELLINGTON MEETING

The Wellington Racing Club’s Steeplechase meeting opened yesterday. For days past it had been raining, and there was no improvement yesterday morning, but the committee decided to hold the races. In Wellington in rained pretty steadily all the morning and when the special trains left the prospects were anything but pright. At Trentham, however, the weather was better, and outside an occasional slight drizzle, no rain fell during the progress of the racing. Taking the state of the elements into consideration, the atendance was really good. A plentiful supply ol straw and planking had been provided in the enclosure and this helped to a great extent in keeping the spectators dry shod. The saddling paddock and bird cage were regular quagmuires towards the close of the day. In the Parliamentary Handicap, the locally owned and trained “ The Rover,” was the popular fancy but the impost of tost, xlb., and the heavy going told at the finish and after running with the field for about a mile he fell back beaten and was one of the last to finish.

The following are the results : Stewards' Handicap. Mount Victoria x, Shuja 2, Deploy 3.

First Hack and Hunters’ Steeplechase.—Torbelle 1, Taiaha 2, Armagh 3. Trial Plate. —Peary 1, Kew 2, Simila 3. Wellington Steeplechase. Captain Jingle x, Antarctic 2, Zante 3, Parliamentary Handicap. Coronetted 1, Brown Trout 2, Salute 3. Winter Hurdles.—White Cockade 1, Sandy Paul 2, Boilin 3. Te Aro Handicap.—Kilratn 1, Diavolo 2, Outward 3.
