ARBOR DAY.

Arbor Day was celebrated by the children attending the local State School yesterday. Lessons appropriate t 6 the occasion were given aud the elder scholars —boys anu girls—made a start on the garden plots aud planted suitable shrubs. The ground has also been prepared lor hedge plants along the Park Street frontage. In the afternoon the flag was saluted aud the National Authem sung. The childreu then assembled in the quadrangle. Addresses were given by his Worship the Mayor (Mr G. H. Stiles) aud the Chairman of Committee (Mr Hornblow). The children sang the song of “Arbor Day” and “Recessional,” very nicely, ■jev t il of the scholars rendered songs and recitations, after which they were dismissed for the remainder of the afternoon.
