Christchurch, June 30

Hannah Dunn, aged 80 years, a widow, residing in Saudytord street, Sydenham, was knocked down by a motor car in Colombo street, Sydenham, about 5.40 yesterday evening, and died from the result of injuries received. At the inquest to-day, Thomas Guy, owner and driver of the car, stated he was licensed to ply for hire, and was returning to town ‘on his proper side of the street when a motorman on a tramcar behind rang his bell, and witness, in order to avoid a collision with two cylists who were on their wrong side, crossed to his wrong side 01 tne road. On returning to his proper side a woman suddenly appeared in the middle of the road, and the next thing he knew was that the car had knocked her down. At the time of the accident the car was going at the rate of between four and five miles per hour. Immediately he saw the woman he applied the brakes, and believed he pulled up within five or six feet. The Coroner advised witness always to keep to bis proper side of the road, and he recorded the following verdict: “ That the deceased waa killed in Colombo street, Sydenham, by being knocked down by a motor car driven by one Thomas Guy, while on his vvrong side of the street.”

It is probable that the police will proceed lurther in the matter.
