FOOTBALL.

The Horowhenua Rugby Union’s senior championship competition was advanced another stage on Saturday, when Tainui defeated Shannon by 15 points to nil. By their defeat on Saturday the Shannouites were definitely put out of the running, and the championship now lies between Tainui and Levin-Wanderers. Neither of these teams has yet met defeat, and the only match in which they have opposed each other resulted in a draw. Their next meeting should be worth going a long way to see. On Saturday the Shannon team included six Foxtonians : Reid, Rore, Haeaua, Woods, Reihana and Shamrock. Reid played the finest forward game on the ground, leading nearly every rush and dribbling in great style. He was ably backed up by Reihana, who made bis first appearance this season.

The Mauawatu and Hawke’s Bay representative teams met at Napier on Saturday. The game was fast and keenly contested, but the home team proved too strong in the backs and won by 17 points to 8.

The Auckland representative team defeated Thames at Auckland by 39 points to 3.

At Brisbane on Saturday Queensland defeated New South Wales by 23 points to 8.
