NOTES AND COMMENTS.
During last Parliament the Wanganui Education Board had an Empowering Bill introduced in connection with the improvement of their harbour, but on account of the opposition to being included in the proposed rating area on the part of the surrounding districts, the Bill was thrown out. Steps were then taken to set up a Commission to decide upon a rating area and apportion each district’s share of the proposed loan. In connection with this matter, the Kaugitrkei Advocate says: —“Those ratepayers in Rangitikei who are alive to their own interest will take early opportunity oi recording their names on the protest in regard to which Rangitikei County Council has issued circulars. Rangitikei should uoc be called upon to contribute to the revenue of the Wanganui Harbour Board, nor should it be involved in liability for large and costly loans, which may or may not be wisely spent. The attempt to include this district m the rating area of the Wauganui Harbour Board is indefensible. In view of the possibility of Eoxtou Pori being improved, and by means of the extension of the tramway becoming an outlet lor the produce of this district, is an additional strong reason against inclusion in the Wanganui rating area. Wanganui is already drawing revenue from its eudowment at Pohangiua, and this is yet another reason why it should not draw more.”
