At Levin on Saturday, Levin Wanderers defeated Shannon by 12 points to nil. Four of the Shannon players were ordered off the field for questioning the referee’s decisions.
At present a new bridge is being built over the Goverment drain on the Whirokiuo road. A temporary structure has been erected alongside the old one for use until the work is. completed.
Speaking on the Home Rule Bill, Mr Bonar Law said ; “We arc simply gambling on the chance of good government iu Ireland. If there is not good government in Ireland, we shall thiow eighty millions of money into the sea.” ’
A wedding of local interest was celebrated at all Saints’ thurch mis morning, the contracting parties being Mr J. Donaldson and Miss Jessie May, daughter of Mr George Coley, of Himatangi. Full particulars will appear iu next issue.
Instructions have been given by the Postmaster-General (Hon. H. G. Kll), that wherever possible the vacant spaces adjoining post offices shall be planted, the selection of shrubs or trees to be made, of course, to suit the size and locality ol the sections.
A number of rural post offices have been erected on the LeviuFoxtou road, a convenience that will be greatly appreciated by the farmers iu that locality. 'There will be one service daily, the mail being carried by the coachdnver. Tbe service starts next Monday.
A concert will be given by the pupils ol St. Mary’s School in the Town Hall on Friday evening next. The items on the programme include instrumental and vocal items, dialogues, etc. The children have been carelully trained by the sisters, aud are sure to give a good account ot themselves. A dance will follow after the conceit. Admission to concert only is; concert and dance, gems 2s 6d, ladies is 6J. Seats may he reserved at the Council- Chambers, booking fee sixpence extra. Someyeais ago a Rougolea man leased a block ot laud valued at ics pet acre. Later, when valuation put it at £vi 7s Od, he purchased, aud at his death the property was put on the market and purchased by the widow lor 2. And when she wished iu retire just recently the propcity was again put on the market and purchased by a sou for ,£45. He gave up a large block of cheap laud iu» Taranaki district to acquire his old home property aud considers he has got a great bargain.
One sometimes hears reference made to persons who are said to be "hard in the jaw.” Here is an instance, for instance: —L. Carey, whilst playing iu a football match at New Plymouth, met with a paiulul accident as the result of which his elbow was put out. The accident was a simple one. He was endeavouring to prevent an opponent marking the ball, when the latter's jaw came in contact with his elbow, with the above result.
A narrow escape trom a serious accident occurred ru broad street Palmerston yesterday. Mr Goldsbury, of btoney Creek, was driving into town with Miss Clinton, who teaches at Campbell street school, wheu the horse took fright at the borough roller. It swerved and carried the trap between the trees and the rootpath. The wheel oi the trap struck one of the trees, upsetting the vehicle and throwing the occupants out. Miss Chutou escaped with a lew bruises, but Mr Goldsbury was not so fortunate. He received a sligat concussion, and was rendered unconscious tor several minutes. Help was quickly at hand, and the sufferer attended to.
Mr W. G. Beard, President of the Wairarapa branch oi the Daw Society, waxed humorous at the luncheon tendered the Minister of Justice in Mastertou recently. Mr Beard said that the legal prolession knew no politics. It drd not care whether Ananias or George Washington were in power. If there were a preference for either it would be Ananias, because he was a man of the world (laughter). Washington never told a lie, but he probably thought a good many (laughter). Mr Beard did not suggest that the Minister of Justice was either Ananias or Washington. He was apparently a gentleman who pursued the middle course —he was a lawyer. laughter.) In connection with the question oi piecework paddocking at flaxmills, about which a deputation from the Employees’ Union waited on the Flaxmillers' Association last week, our representative saw Mr P. Hally, at Paekakariki ou Saturday, and asked if there was auy likelihood or trouble iu connection with same. Mr Hally expressed the opinion chat auy small difference that might at present exist on this question would be speedily and satisfactorily settled. He was theu ou his way to Wanganui, and upon his return to Palmerston intended to interview some of those interested with a view to getting all particulars possible.
