BETTING BY TELEGRAPH.
CONDEMNED BY JUDGE AND JURY. Blenheim, June 20. In his address to the grand jury at the Supreme Court to-day Mr Justice Chapman made some important observations with regard to the abuse of the Telegraph Department by bookmakers. With regard to the charge against two men of conspiring to defraud by using the Telegraph Department as a vehicle lor a betting transaction, the judge described the conditions that admitted of these abuses as very unsatisfactory, and he represented the necessity for remedial measures on the part of the Legislature or the authorities. His Honour then went on to refer to the prevalence of the gambling evil among young people, and said this evil was assisted by such people being able to use the telegraph offices lor the furtherance of their betting transactions.
The grand jury delivered the following presentment : —“ That as bookmakers and bookmaking are in the present state of the law illegal, steps should be taken to prevent the Telegraph Department being used by bookmakers and clients for the carrying on of betting transactions,”
