PICTURE OPERATING.

At last night’s Council meeting a letter was read from Mr W. Bradcock, asking permission to be allowed in the operating cabinet during the running of the pictures for the purpose of learning operating. He was agreeable to pay a sum to the Council for such privilege. After he had learned he would be willing to run the pictures if the operator were taken ill.

Cr Chrystall moved and Cr Greig seconded, that permission be granted to Mr W. Bradcock to attend the rehearsal of Municipal Pictures for a reasonable time to learn operating. Cr Chrystall said it would be handy to have a skilled operator in town in case the Council’s operator was taken ill. Cr Greig felt the motion was not complete. He wouldn’t like to see the Council make a charge, but he would like to see a clause to the effect that Bradcock could come and assist if the Council required his services. Cr Stewart thought it was a good thing the offer had been made. if the present operator was taken ill there would be a man to take his place. Cr Greig said he was supporting the motion provided it did not conflict with any arrangement the manager may have made, and that Mr Fraser had not been slighted in any way. The Mayor said that the letter had only come to hand that evening and had not been referred to the manager, but he considered it should be. One thing the Council must consider that the plant was too valuable to put . anyone’s hands, and it the present operator were taken ill they would have to employ an expert to run the pictures. He thought the matter should lust be reterred to the manager.

Cr Coley; Fuller’s manager told us that any intelligent man could be made an opeaator in two or three weeks. He was of opinion that the Council should deal with the application and not refer it to the Town Clerk. To refer it to him would be making the Town Clerk the Council.

Cr Richmond agreed that the matter should be dealt with by the Council and not by the Town Clerk, He thought it was a good thing to have another operator in the town, so trial in case of illness the present operator’s place could be taken at a minute’s notice.

The Mayor said that Mr Fraser had been appointed manager of the hall aud up to the present all matters in connection with . same had been referred to him. He did not see why any exception should be made m this case. He had no objection to Bradcock learning, and agreed that they should have someone to take Mr McArtney’s place if he were unable to do hi» woix.

Cr Adams agreed that the application should have come through the manager.

The motion was carried
