METHODIST SOCIAL.
A very pleasant evening was spent on Thursday last in the local Methodist schoolroom, when an interesting programme was rendered by the Shannon Methodist choir (conductor Mr A. Saunders, organist Miss Butt). Two or three items were also given by local friends. There was a very good attendance, considering the state of the weather. The Rev T. Coatsworth presided, and stated that it had been decided to hold a series of these socials during the winter months in order that turn... might be raised to meet some of the debentures at present owing on the parsonage. He also reminded those present that while the spiritual side ot’the church life was all important, yet there was also the social side of the work that should not be neglected. The following programme was then given:—’Anthem, choir, “Nearer,” ; recitation, Miss Mary Tremewan ; solo, Miss D. Signal ; duet, Miss Butt and Mr Cumberland ; quartette, Messrs Rimmer, Cumberland, Saunders and Rev N. Hyde ; gramaphone selections, Mr Betty ; duet, Mesdames Judd and Blight; solo, Rev N. Hyde ; solo, Mr A. Rimmer ; quartette, Messrs Rimmer, Cumberland, Saunders and Rev N. Hyde ; anthem, choir, “Diadem” ; gramaphone selections, Mr Betty. Misses Butt aud Honore, and Mr G. H. Stiles acted as accompanists. At the conclusion of the programme, Mr G. H. Stiles, on behalf of the Foxton Methodist Church, thanked the performers from Shannon for the most enjoyable programme that they bad given. It said much for their enthusiasm having come all the way from Shannon on such a rough night. He rejoiced at the success attending the work of the church at Shannon, aud trusted that the church would be even more prosperous under the ministry of the Rev N, Hyde, to whom he gave a very hearty welcome. He also thanked Mr Betty for his very fine selections on the gramaphone, and all who had assisted in making the social a pleasant one. Mr M. H. Walker briefly seconded the vote of thanks, and fully endorsed all that Mr Stiles. had said. The Rev N. Hyde replied ou behalf of his choir, and hoped that the Foxtou choir would return the visit at an early date. After the Benediction had been pronounced, refreshments were handed round, aud the gathering dispersed.
