The first of the triangular tests has been played and the Australian team —despite the fact that the six malcontents, Armstrong, Trumpet, Cotter, Rausford, Hill and Carter are absent —has shown that it is equal to any of the previous teams that have visited England. The match was against South Africa, Australia winning by the handsome margin of an innings of 87 runs. Australia batted first and compiled 448, the New South Welshmen, Kelleway and Bardsley, both getting over the century mark, 114 and 121 respectively. Matthews, the Queenslander, also batted well, notching 49 not out. South Africa replied with 265, of which Faulkner compiled 122 not out. Bowling honours were shared by Whitty and Matthews, the latter performing the hat trick. In their second essay the Africans gave a most disappointing display, the innings resembling a game of skittles. The last wicket fell with the score at the ridiculously small total of 96. Kelleway secured five wickets, Matthews three and Whitty two. Emery, the “googly,’: or “Bosie” bowler, did not meet with any great success on this occasion. This bowler, when he is “on it, 1 ' is very difficult to play, but he is not consistent, being unable, very often, to get a proper length. In view ot the above easy win for Australia, the forthcoming match, Australia v. England, should be of particular interest.
