Some time since a number of parents at Te Wharangi forwarded a petition to the Foxton School Committee asking that a sideschool be established at the Beach The' requisite number of names appeared on the petition, and the committee forwarded it on to the Board for its favourable consideration. Advantage was taken of Chief-Inspector Braik’s presence in Foxton yesterday to discuss the question, and the committee arranged a conference with the Board member, Mr Alt. Fraser, and the Chief Inspector. The conference was held yesterday afternoon in the Council Chamber. The following members of committee were present: Messrs Hornblow (chairman), Betty, Barber, Frankland, Henderson and Alex. Speirs. The Chairman outlined the steps taken and added that a number of people from other districts who visited the sea side for health reasons would remain, if a school were established their children could attend.—lt was pointed out that the distance was outside the limit for a side school. Mr Fraser said he would accompany the inspector to the locality and interview some ot the residents, after which the Board would take what necessary steps it deemed advisable. In any case nothing would be done to conflict with the interests' of the local school.

The question of asking the Board’s assistance for conveying Maori children across the river by boat in order to attend school would be considered by the Board.

The Inspector urged upon the committee to raise the status of the school to that x>f a High School. The Chairman said this matter had been discussed and would be re-considered by the committee at its next meeting. The committee was informed that the question of the appointment of another male in lieu of a female assistant on the staff would be considered.

The committee, after thanking the Inspector and Mr Fraser for the interview, retired.
