The Manawatu Herald. Saturday, May 25, 1912. NOTES AND COMMENTS.
Up to the preseat the conduct of the young fellows attending the mountfcl camp a*- bee - .’ exemplary. The u .; : oritie*-. at first, were a little dun.'ear a? tv selecting Foxton as a suitable training centre, on account of the proximity ot the public bars. The officer-in-charge made it clear to the young fellows that the indulgence in intoxicating liquors was an offence and would be promptly repressed, and as most of those in camp are below the statutory age which entitles them to “breast the bar,” there has not been anything to complain of in this connection. In fact the hotel keepers do not desire to place temptation in the way of the Territorials. Plenty of good healthy amusements have been provided lor the men, and the Anglican and Presbyterian denominations have tents erected on the grounds where the men can while away their spare time in perusing the newspapers and latest magazines and attend to their correspondence. We think the Council should have invited the officers and men to at least one free picture entertainment, and in this particular we share the opinion of a majority of the citizens. A little hospitality on the part ol our civic fathers would be ot more lasting good to Foxton than the mercenary policy which has been adopted. It should also be remembered that the Territorials will spend at least 10s per head among our tradespeople during the encampment. There have been no serious complaints from the men as to the catering and accommodation, and we believe the Foxton camp will put up a record in this connection. A spirit of comradeship exists between the officers and men, all being anxious to fulfil the requirements ot the Defence Act.
