SCHOOL COMMITTEE.

The ordinary monthly meeting of the School Committee was held on Thursday evening. Present : Messrs Fraukland (chairman), Betty, Hunt, Hussey, Henderson aud Barber (secretary).

In connection with the conveyance of children from across the river, Mr Henderson reported that there were only seven or eight children attending from the other side of the river, aud the tender for conveying these across was ,£25 per annum. There was some discussion on the matter, and it was eventually decided to leave it in the hands of Mr Hunt who will present a report at the next meeting.

It was decided to dig a new cess pit adjacent to and connected with the present one. The headmaster reported as follows :—The attendances for the past four weeks were 286.7, 280.5, 291.1, 305.5. The average for the whole period was 290.9 out ol an average roll number of 333. The roll number at present is 335. The attendance is now only slightly affected by mumps. The Truant Officer visited the school on Tuesday afternoon. Mr Barber, member of the visiting committee, visited the school on Monday. I have been informed that the Board proposes to appoint Miss H. A, Woodford to the position of 4th assistant teacher, vice Mr Wilson, who is being transferred. I may state that this change has been caused by the failing off in the attendance during last year, the school being reduced in grade from Sa to 7b. An average of 301 will be necessary to retain the present staffing during next year. Should the attendance fall below this the school will lose one assistant teacher. I have been asked by the Truant Officer to ask the Committee to make some recommendation to the Board re the conveyance of children across the river. Seven children are at present affected and their attendance is somewhat irregular. The school buildings and furniture are in good condition, borne minor matters requiring attention were pointed out to the visiting committee.

Other routine business was transacted and the meeting terminated.
