HOROWHENUA RUGBY

UNION,

A meeting of the Management Committee ot the Horowheuua Rugby Union was held at Eeviu on Thursday evening. Present: —Messrs Procter (chairman), Bevau, McMillan, Kaurauti, Mann and Rout (secretary). The following letter was received from Mr W. C. Eccleton, the referee in the match Esvin v. Hui Mai, on Saturday : —“I beg to report having had charge of the above game. I have to report having ordered off the field two players, J. Saxon (Eevin) and J. Martin (Hui Mai), for deliberately assaulting one another, neither player at the time being in possession of the ball. When I first noticed them they were lying on the ground grabbing with oue another, and as I stopped the game and spoke to them, Martin struck Saxon in the face with his open hand, at the same time making use of objectionable language. They both went off quietly when I ordered them to do so.” Mr Eccletou said that preceding the assault, when Martin got through the Eeviu team, Stuckey tackled him, and there was a scramble. He believed the Hui Mai team had got the ball and were about to make a loose rush, when he noticed Saxon and Martin lying on the ground, Saxon seemed to have Martin by the throat, and Martin was getting a small advantage as he stopped the game, Martin then atruck Saxon, and used an objectionable expression. He ordered them off the field, and they went quietly. Saxon was in attendance, and discussion ensued as to whether the meeting should deal with the case that evening.
