“Absolutely illegal,” said Mr E. J. Righton, of Christchurch, in reply to a reporter’s query concerning the sale of wild ducks. “Wild ducks are uot saleable. Neither native or imported game is allowed to be sold during the shooting season.”

Parishioners of the St. Peter’s Church, Palmerston, have themselves pledged to proceed with a scheme for the erection of a new church at a cost of ,£B,OOO. A sum of ,£4,000 is at present in band, and an active canvass is to be made to raise the balance. It is hoped to have the necessary funds to commence the work in the course of two years. A woman called at the hospital in Bilboa, Spain, recently, bringing her son, who had enormous hands and twelve fingers on each. The most curious part of the case is that all her sous possess similar hands. One has 21 fingers, another 23, and the other five children 24 fingers each. All are living and enjoying good health. Many doctors are studying these cases. At Zaratouo, a town in the same province, a case has occurred which is probably unique of its kind. A child has just been born, while his father, grandlather, and great-great-grandfather are all living. His name is Urriticoechia, and the family are Basque farm labourers. The great grandfather and great-great-grandfather have acted as godfathers to the latest arrival, The united family constitutes nearly a whole village.

From all quarters of the Southland district (says the Invercargill News), come reports that the potato crop is much below that or the average of the past five seasons, blight and excessive ram being the facto is that have brought about this disappointing result. A large area of the Tuatapere district has, as usual, been placed under crop, but on good authority we learn that the average yield will not exceed seven tons an acre in cases where twelve tons an acre have been obtained in previous years. A grower in the Ryal Bush district devoted ten acres of his farm to potato growing. and is afraid he will have to plough them in, the crop being so light, due to the abnormal rainfall. There is, consequently, every indication that values, which are now remunerative, will rise still higher, especially in the face of the fact that there are inquiries from Sydney. When addressing his constituents at Foxton, Mr Robertson, M.P., referring to the political position, said that “ For the first time in the history of New Zealand politics the Premier was elected by the party in power.” This is a mistake, tor Mr Seddou was appointed by the party to which he belonged. The Conservative newspapers of the day accused Mr Seddou of having seized the position —but they were wrong, Mr Seddon was duly appointed at a fully attended caucus of the Liberal Party, and there were only two dissentient votes. The Opposition newepapers at that time so continually reiterated the statement that Mr Seddon had “ seized ” the reins of office that many thousands of people came to believe it. But the statement was a false one. Mr Seddon had capably filled the position of actmg-Premier during the illness of Mr Ballance and the Liberal Party, with ouly two exceptions, declared for Mr Seddou for the Premiership, —Eltham Argus.

Although a sufficient number attended at the Presbyterian Hall on Thursday night to form a quorum for the annual meeting of the Foxton Eiterary and Debating Society, it was decided to postpone the meeting until Wednesday evening next in order that the attendance may be larger. In view of the rather important matters to be discussed concerning the future welfare of the Society it is necessary that all members at all interested should make a point of being present, Some suggestions were made on Thursday night which, if adopted by the Society, would be the means of spreading interest in the club to a much wider circle thau at piesent and would increase both the educative aud social value of the meetiugs. It must be borne in mind that this is a young society, and all the assistance available ia any directiou is uecessary from its members, and it is to be hoped that a full muster will be recorded at the postponed auuual meeting next Wednesday eveuiug.
