CRICKET.
It was rather a disappointment to followers ot the good old game of cricket to learn that tne Australian team nad suffered defeat iu their lirst match iu England. Notts is uot oue of the foremost counties iu English cricket aud it was anticipated that, although it would be 100 early to expect the Cornstalks to show tneir best form, they would at least be equal to holding their own iu the opening match. However, the cables tell us that the home team gained a six wickets victory. This match made the nineteenth between Notts and Australia, seven being won by Notts, six by Australia aud six drawn. The last occasion on which the home team defeated t he visitors was during the 1890 team’s lour. Of course it must be takeu into consideration that this match was the first experience of Dughsh wickets by the majority of the visiting players, aud u is uaiy reasonable to expect that as they get more “climatised” better exhiuitions will be given. It is tne opinion of a great number, who should be in a position to judge, that the “colts” will take a lot of beating before ttic .jur is finished. W e hope so au yno w ! The Australians made a better start iu their second match against Northampton, scoring iu their first innings 370. Veteran Syd. Gregory aud Macartney showed good form the former scoring 150 aud the latter 127. The “tail refused to wag,” the only other double figure scorers being Mayue, Barnsley aud jeauings. Northampton have lost oue wicket for oue run.
