GROWTH OF INDUSTRIES.
The Gazette contains interesting statistics (compiled from the last census) relating to the growth of industries iu the last three years. Iu the great majority of cases these show striking advances iu the value of output compared with 1905 and 1900, when census was previously taken. Some typical examples are worth reproducing. The value of the output of butter and cheese increased from £2,581,639 in 1905 to ,£3,919.184 in 1910 ; bacon-curing from ,£253,937 to ,£371,621 in the same period ; gram-milling, from ,£1,058.186 to ,£1,248,001 ; fruit-preserving and jam-making, from ,£98,°3 2 to 506 ; confectionery, from £,'138.635 to -£259,498 ; aerated water and cordials, from ,£189,561 to .£250,571 ; soap and candles, from £178,556 to £268,635 ; clothing and waterproofs, from £308,943 to £507,125 ; furniture, from £328,185 to £497,681 ; saddlery aud harness, from £140,813 to ,£220,364 ; rope and twine, from £100,753 to £104,325 ; printing, from £1,067,827 to £1,377,926 ; engineering, from £437,036 to £751.485 J ship aud boat-building, from £66,572 to £143,019; bricks, tiles aud pottery, from £216,550 to £235,220 ; and lime and cement, from £170,675 to £184,686. In biscuit making and iron aud brass works only are declines shown. The value of the former's output was stated at £225,476 in 1905, against £168,122 iu X9lO ; aud the latter £376,527 in 1905 as against £374, 1 55 i a 1910. The increase iu the number of hands employed is ou a proportional basis.
