THE FOXTON CAMP.
The Defence Department is completing its arrangements for the Mounted Rifles encampment on the local racecourse, commencing on the 22nd instant.
The camp will last for seven days, from the 23rd to 29th, both days inclusive. All ranks will be paid for nine days—for seven days training and two days travelling to camp and back. Lieutenant-Colonels will receive 15s, majors 12s, captains 10s, lieutenants and second lieutenant Bs, staff sergeants 5s 6d, corporals 4s 6d, other ranks 4s. Meals will be supplied by a caterer and no deductions will be made from camp pay for meals, lighting and forage. All ranks including civilians who are working at the camp, will be under military law whilst going to, present at or returning from camp. Advance parties from each squadron will proceed to Foxtou on the 19th to pitch camp. The “A” squadron will entrain at Wellington on the 22nd and proceed to Levin, where it will detrain and march to Foxtou. The •‘B” squadron will march from Palmerston to Foxtou on the 22nd, the Levir troop joining the “A” squadron at Levin. “C ” squadron will entrain at Taihape, Greatford and intermediate stations on the 22nd and detrain at Foxtou, while the ‘ D ’ troup will assemble at Awahuri on the 21 st and march to Foxton on the 22nd.
The camp will be laid down on the western side of the racecourse. It will be arranged in the form of a square, divided into four quarters, each of which will be occupied by one squadron, there being four iu camp. Kach squadron’s ground* will be laid off into four lines —one for each troop, of which there are four in each squadron. Lach troop’s lines will contain five tents and the men’s own horses will be picketed in front of each tent.
Two wide streets will be laid off through the camp, oue leading to the quartermaster’s stores where the forage for the horses will be kept, and the other to the cook house.
The officers’ quarters will be immediately in front of the racecourse buildings. Marquees will be provided for lecture rooms for the evening, whilst it is understood the Presbyterian Church authorities intend erecting a marquee and providing a reading and writing room lor the men.
