HARBOUR BOARD CHAIRMANSHIP.

MR HRNNESSY R-KLKCTED

At the annual meeting of the Foxtou Harbour Board, held at Palmerston North, on Thursday, Mr Nash moved that Mr Henuessy be re-elected chairman. In speaking to the motion the mover said that the work performed by Mr Heunessy had been very valuable indeed to the Board. He had given a great deal ot time to looking after the Board’s affairs, which were no sinecure. In connection with the preparation of the Bill he had travelled a great deal in searcn of information for which, he assured him, the Board members were very grateful. He would be very sorry indeed to see any alteration in the chairmanship as Mr* Hennessy had filled the position very capably.

Mr Gardener seconded the motion. He said it would be a great mistake to have any alteration in the chairmanship. It would be impossible to get a better chairman and he hoped Mr Henuessy would see his ambition—the wharf controlled by the Board—realised.

.Mr Gibbs also eulogised the good work of the Chairman.

Tue morion was carried

In thanking the members for the honour and responsibility conferred on him, Mr Hennessy said that although it would suit him very well to relinquish the Chairmanship, he agreed that it was not advisable to, as it were, “ change horses iu the middle ef the stream.” As soon as the wharf difficulty was settled, however, the Chairman would not have a very difficult position to occupy. With the improvement of the bar and river he was confident that a very large trade could be opened with Southern ports. Just recently a vessel of 500 tons register had visited Foxton and had sailed again at night, the master stating that the lighting of the river was equal to that of Wanganui. Provided vessels of this description were able to make the port at neap tides a very large increase iu the shipping returns would be brought about.
