PRISONER RECAPTURED.
The L iu jner joha Eewis, who escaped irum Mount Cook gaol works last Thursday afternoon, was caught at Ohariu, near Johnsonville, on Saturday morning by Detectives Kemp, Hammond, and Andrews.
Alter getting away on Thursday, Lewis obtained a razor and shaved off his beard of several days’ growth. Donning a suit ot civilian clothes over his prison apparel, he took a tramcar to Island Bay, and from there walked to Ohariu, his object being to proceed to rue railway line. He outaiued food ny begging from houses. The bad weather made matters very unpleasant for Eewis, who confessed to having endured a rough time. The man was found hiding iu a cupnoard oi an upstairs room of a vacant house which stood back about one mile and a half from the road.
He surrendered quietly, and was brought to town and placed in the Terrace Gaol. In his possession was a false moustache aud a small amount 01 mouey.
