A meeting of the Foxton Harbour Board will be held at the Council' Chambers, Palmerston N. on Thursday, May 2nd, at 1.30 p.m. Business: To elect chairman, consideration of balancesheet and general. Mr Mark Cohen, editor of the Dunedin Star, applies the name “wowser” to the anti-militarist; because, he says, “wowser” is a fitting name for “a person who is of little use to himself, and of no use to the country in which he lives.” The attendance at the social held in the Coronation Hall last night, under the auspices of the local Catholic Church, was not as large as usual. The inclemency of the weather no doubt prevented a number from attending. A very enjoyable time, however, was spent by those present, Messrs P. Heuuessy and Co., notify that on account of the business changing hands on May 1 st, holders of cash register coupons desiring a rebate in goods to the extent of five per cent, should return same before that date. On coupons returned after the first proximo a cash rebate of sixpence in the £ only will be allowed.
The annual meeting ot the parishioners ot All Saints’ Church will be held on Monday, the 29th April, in the Schoolroom at S p,m. The treasurer will render the balance-sheet and the Vicar will read his report lor the year. The churchwardens and vestry will be elected. The ladies of All Saints’ Guild will supply refreshments and a musical social will also be given. It is hoped that all parishioners will be present. The old Victory quartz claim at Tyell. and once held by the late Mr Thomas Huugerford, has lately been taken up by a small syndicate of Christchurch and Greymouth men, says the Grey River Argus. They commenced operations in an ..I I abandoned tunnel, and commenced following up what seemed to be an ordinary quartz leader a few inches thick. This increased steadily as it was followed, and has developed into a well defined auriferous reef 3 feet thick that assays an ounce to the ton. There is, therefore, some slight chance of the old Tyell looking up again in the mining world,

James Me Watt, a second-hand dealer at Invercaigill, was yesterday sentenced to three mouths' imprisonment for keeping liquor for sale. He;had been previously fined for a similar offence. The special skating session for ladies on Tuesday afternoon was fairly well attended, and an enjoyable time was spent by skaters. The Municipal Rink will be open this evening and to-morrow evening.
A correspondent writes to the Te Puke Times: —A Maori farmer, dairying at Pukehina, near Pougakawa, who was called away on uigent business, had to leave his wife without any assistance whatever to manage a herd of about 20 cows. Besides rising early to do her own domestic duties, she had to milk and separate without help, and then ride three miles to take the cream to a cart for the factor}'. She repeated this a few days. She is a wife in a thousand, and one whom any man ought to be proud of.
