SCHOOL COMMITTEE ELECTION.

The I - meeting of the outgoing sc con 1- : ttee eld prior to i. L . ust de ig, ii he chof house last night. Rirain rov ‘•■usi - 'ss w s ' - tended to, and the report and balance-sheet to be presented to the householders meeting adopted. It was decided to reier the petition from the Beach residents (or a side school at the sea-side, to the incoming committee. HOUSEHOLDERS 1 MEETING. The annual meeting of householders for the purpose of electing a committee for the ensuing year was held at the conclusion of the committee meeting. Mr S. Read was voted to th*chair. There was a very small attendance.

The committee’s annual report as follows was read :

“I have much pleasure iu again submitting for your consideration the committee’s auuual report and balance sheet. During tbe year 12 meetings, including specials, have been held, the attendance of committeemen being as tollows : Messrs Betty n, Cole} 6, Homblow 12, Hussey 8, Henderson 12, Hunt xo, Procter 4, Read n and Speirs 9, The committee started the year with a credit balance ol £27 is and hand over to the incoming committee a credit of 17s lod. It will be noticed that the General Account is indebted to the Ground Improvement Account to.the extent of 15s 3d. This gives au idea of the inadequate amount of the capitation grant for general purposes, and were it not for the splendid assistance rendered by the teaching staff and scholars aud a generous public it would be impossible tor the committee to pay its way. The committee has also been compelled this year to pay the borough sanitation charge of ,£8 10s. This, however, will not be recurring as the Board has kindly consented to pay half of this charge in future, and I understand that the Borough Council is also willing to put on a picture eutertaiument to assist the committee iu this respect. The school cleaning, at a cost of ,£37 6s, reflects the greatest credit upou the caretaker, and does much to keep the children iu a healthy condition during school hoursThe cleanliness of the school has been favourably commented on by the Inspector and visitors. The school grounds have been lurther improved by the planting ofsuitable shiubs on the mound at the northeast corner of the grounds. Ten pounds was expended iu this connection and the planting was carried out by the children under the supervision of the headmaster. The sub-committee appointed reported that the levelling of the play ground should be undertaken in the autumn aud carried out by day labour, one half of the ground to be done at a time. The incoming committee are recommended to have this work put in hand straight away. All the fences have been attended to aud are now iu good repair. The Board has carried out certain improvements to the headmaster’s residence and old school residence. The children have taken a keen interest in tlie school gardens, which present a very attractive appearance. Perfect harmony has existed between the committee aud the teacomg staff, the latter, at all times, expressing a desire to co-operate with the committee iu any special effort to augment the funds. I have to report that the attendance for the year while good fell just below 300. The attendance for the first quarter of this year is slightly over 300, which entitles us to a continuance of the services of au extra teacher. The Inspector’s reports on the work of the school are entirely satistactorj:. During the year a successful concert was organised and carried out, aud the children were taken for a railway excursion aud picnic on the Ashhurst Domain, where a thoroughly enjoyable time was spent. The year commences for the incoming committee under very favourable auspices and it is hoped that a successful term of office will reSll l t> _on behalf A tbe Committee, John K. Hoknbi.ow, chairman,” The balance-sheet disclosed that the receipts for the past year, including the balance brought forward, amounted to ,£124 9s 6d and the expenditure to us Sd, leaving a credit balance to commence the new year with ol the different funds showed the general account in debit to the extent of £27 15s 3d and the grounds improvement aud picnic and prize funds were iu credit us 3d and £2 2s od respectively. The report aud balance sheet was adopted. On the motion of Mr Henderson, seconded by Mr Hunt, a vote ol thanks was passed to Mr Jackson aud his staff for the manner in which they had carried out their duties during the past year, and for their assistance in any object for the raising of funds or for the welfare of the children.

Both the mover and seconder spoke in eulogistic terms of the teaching staff, stating that the success of the various special efforts was in a great measure due to the enthusiasm displayed by them.

Mr Jackson returned thanks to the meeting for passing the resolution and assured those present that both he and his staff would continue to do all they could for the welfare of the school and the children. He also desired to personally thank the Chairman of the Committee for his courtesy and assistance during the past year.

Mr Henderson, as a member of the previous year’s committee, moved a very hearty vote of thanks to the chairman for the manner in which he had conducted the meetings and the business. -k* : a- --r-ie' 1 acclamation. Nominations for committeemen for the ensuing Lrm were ihen taken, the folio- lug gentlemen being nominated Messrs Hornblow, Coley, Speirs, Henderson, Frankland, Betty, Hussey, Hunt, Barber, Read and Daniell, and upon a ballot being taken the first nine were declared duly elected. lu moving a hearty vote of thanks to Mr Read for presiding, Mr Hornblow made mention of that gentleman’s good work on the committee during the past year, stating that it was almost entirely due to his efforts that the receut enjoyable school picnic on the Ashhurst Domain was held. He regretted that there was not a larger attendance of householders at the meeting, but apparently the residents were quite satisfied with the administration of the Committee during the past and were quite agreeable to leave the work in their hands.

The motion was carried and the meeting terminated.

The new committee met after the above meeting, when Mr Hornblow was re-elected chairman and Mr George Barber secretary. Mr Mr F. D. Whibley was appointed auditor. It was decided to meet ou the third Thursday iu each month at 7,30 p.m. in winter aud 8 p.m. in summer. The petition from residents at the beach for a side school at that locality was received and discussed. It w?s unanimously decided to forwaid the petition to the Board suggesting that the Chief Inspector visit the locality and confer with the committee on the subject. The feeling of the committee was favourable to the petition.

Messrs Barber and Betty were appointed visitors for the month. A sub-committee was appointed to inspect the overflow well, with power to act. MOUTOA. There was au attendance of about 16 at the meeting aud 12 nominations were received for seven seats on the committee. The ballot resulted in the following being returned: Messrs A. Saunders (chairman), j. Doyle, M. Newtb, W. Dudsou, Wilkins, W. Gifkins and H. Grover (secretary).
