MAORIS AND POLITICS.
Weleington, April 15
During the Easter week a large gathering of the Maoris of Tokaauu and surrounding districts, belonging to Te Heuheu’s tribe, was held at Mokai. Te Heuheu himself was present, and addressed the assemblage. During the course of his oration he said he had been commissioned by Sir Jas. Carroll and Mr Ngata to go round and explain why those gentlemen had resigned from the Ministry. He said he had done it to save the ship. That was why they left the Government, but they still held the power over the new Ministry, and Te Raugihiroa (Dr. Buck) was only in it. not exactly on sufferance, but as a hostage. If the new Cabinet did not do the bidding of Carroll and Ngata out would go Mr Rangihi10a. Sir Jas. Carroil and Mr Ngata, he further explained, had asked Dim to organise the natives fur the next geueial election. He urged them to be in readiness, because there would be another general election shortly.
