SERIOUS CHARGE AGAINST TELEGRAPHIST.
ATTEMPT TO DEFRAUD BOOKIES.
Blenheim, April xi.
Edmund John Walsh, grocer, and John Vernon Binley, telegraphist, appeared at the Magistrate’s Court to-day charged with conspiracy by deceit to defraud Ross and Bradshaw, and Scott and Martindale, of Wellington of sums of and ros on, certain betting transactions. It is alleged that Binley arranged with Walsh to go to the Wanganui races, leaving signed telegrams to be handed in prior to the time of the race. Walsh telegraphed the winners to an address in Blenheim, and Binley watched the Wanganui wires, held back telegrams to the firms, erased the horses names and substituted the winning horse. The firms were suspicious and made enquiries, prosecution of the two men being the result. Inspector Ellison is appearing for the police.
