SKATING.

Indications point towards a very successful season at the Municipal Rink, the attendances during the two nights the rink has been open being very good. The learners’ room is well patronised, and gives promise of producing some good and enthusiastic skaters. The idea of confining the learners to a separate room proves a good one, not only allowing the competent skaters to enjoy the hall floor’ with a minimum risk of collisions aud consequent “spills,” but gives the novices equal advantages in that they may “toddle” around, practically free from onlookers, aud without the unnerving whirl and speed of those who have attained the necessary confidence aud art of balancing, until they feel sufficiently competent to emerge into the larger rink, assisted perhaps by the number of ever-willing accomplisned skaters. The appearance ot those present suggested thorough enjoyment, and the management of the rink is thorough aud complete, reflecting credit on the manager, Mr Alt. Fraser, and his assistants. The suppression of roughness in any form among the skaters makes the pastime attractive and most enjoyable for ladies, aud the percentage ot ladies among the learners is very satisfactory. No doubt this healthful’ and enjoyable pastime will remain popular throughout the coming winter mouths. The floor space aud convenient squareness of the Municipal Hall makes it adaptable as an ideal skating floor, free from sharp corners so detrimental to pleasurable skating. The spectators are accommodated on the stage, from whence a clear view ot the rink is obtained, this advantage would be lost from the dress circle, as only portions of the floor are visible from the foremost seats. The attendance of spectators last night was lair. The rink will be open again tonight aud to morrow night, when no doubt gooc will be attracted by this exhilarating amusement.
