THE SOUTH POLE.

WAS SCOTT SUCCESSFUL ? ARRIVAL OF THE TERRA NOVA. STRICT RETICENCE. Wellington, April 1. The Terra Nova arrived at Akaroa at 6 a.m. It is uncertain whether any news of Captain Scott’s expedition will be available for to-day’s evening papers. The Central News Agency of London is the holder of the main copyright, and its representative in New Zealand controls the time at which it will be given out, which will probably be made to suit the English papers first of all. The Terra Nova arrived at Akaroa early this morning, and cruised about the harbour. Launches which put out from the shore were not allowed to communicate, and no news was given except that the men aboard were all fit and well. Those who went out found a boxing contest in progress on deck, with a kinematograph operating. A brief message from the Star’s correspondent says that the crew “seem satisfied.” The Terra Nova remains at Akaroa over to-morrow, and comes to Lyttelton on Wednesday morning. It is understood that the vessel leit the party behind for another year. The reason why the Terra Nov* has not come to Stewart Island, as was given out, is that on lormer occasions attempts were made to intercept news there by persons from America and other countries.

The other day an offer of .£SO was made to a Government'official at Half Moon Bay to send a message to America. To delude these gentry, Stewart Island was mentioned as the Terra Nova’s port of call, and the real destination was kept secret. Christchurch, April x.

Mr Kinsey, interviewed, said he had a brief message from Akaroa reporting an weu on the Terra Nova. One party remained behind in the Antarctic. He was asked it Captain Scott was on board the Terra Nova, but said he was unable to supply any information at present.
