FOXTON WINS THE SHIELD

The Horowhenua Cricket Association’s competition for the Hall Shield was decided on Saturday, Foxton defeating the Training Farm, thus entitling the club to hold the Shield for the ensuing year.

Foxtou was without the services of Cook, their wicket-keeper, his place being taken by Martin, who was to accompany the team as umpire. Redgrave won the toss, elected to bat, and with Cleland opened the innings to the bowling of Eggleton and Finning. In the first three overs only three runs were scored and one run later Cleland was bowled. The second wicket fell with the score at 21, Redgrave being bowled in attempting to lilt Finning. Six runs later the third wicket fell, the fourth with the score at 36, fifth at 39, sixth at 46, seventh at 53, eighth at 55, and the ninth and last at 60,

The Training Farm ground is a splendid one, the outfield being superior to anything in the district and on such a ground it is indeed a small score, consequently the chances ot the home team when they went into bat were considered very good indeed. Another instance ol “the glorious uncertainty of cricket” was given, however, for although the Training Farm considered their team was a fairly strong batting side, after 38 balls had been bowled the last man was disposed ot for the ridiculously small total of 21 runs, three of which were byes. Redgrave was unplayable, securing nine wickets for three runs. He was unluckly in missing the hat trick on two occasions. We believe that his performance with the ball is something of a record, as he secured nine wickets with 20 balls at a cost of only three runs. For a team to be dispossd of in six overs and two balls is something previously unheard of hereabouts. The following are the scores ; Foxton. The points scored by each club in the competition were as under :

The balance of the matches drawn have, on account of the lateness in the season, been abandoned. The result of the competition could not be affected as ail the clubs, with the exception of Foxton, have lost two matches each, and Foxton to complete their matches had only to play Taiuui, so even if this match was lost Foxton would still win the championship.

A match was to have been played locally next Saturday against Wadestown, but a telegram was received yesterday asking that the match be cancelled.
