The steam trawler “Energy,” has arrived safely in Wellington. The death is reported of Mrs T. Wiggins, an old Grey town identity, aged 79 years. A mao named Thomas Feruly, an ex-doctor, aged 40 years, died suddenly at the Salvation Army Home, Auckland, this week. A meeting of the Foxton Borough Council will be held in the Council Chamber on Friday, 29th inst., at 7 o’clock. Business: Municipal skating rink. A committee meeting of the local Horticultural Society will be held in the Town Hall supper room to-morrow night at 7.30 o’clock.
Right Hon. James Bryce, 0.M., British Ambassador to the United States, is sailing for New Zealand shortly. For several years he has been writing a book upon democracy, aud he is anxious to study New Zealand at first hand.
At the Palmerston S.M. Court last Tuesday, Joseph Cooksley recovered the sum of £2 and costs £2 is from J. Olsen for driving his vehicle over plaintiff ’s dog and killing it. The Magistrate held shat defendant could have avoided lUc Jog. ■
It is said that a curious and amusing incident occurred during the service at Sandringham Church on Christmas Day. The Prince of Wales appeared suddenly to recollect that he had come to church without mouey for the collection. He left the church, aud, beckoniug to a police officer, borrowed some money from him, at the same time telling the officer on no account to let him forget the matter.
An unstamped receipt was the cause of George Buckmau's appearing at the Palmerstou Police Court recently. Sergeant Willis stated that defendant had given the receipt to the Pohaugiru County Council for wages, and that the Government auditor had noticed it when going through the accounts. Defendant pleaded guilty, aud stated that through it being on a printed form he did not think a stamp was needed for an amount over £z. fie was hned 5s with £1 ns oncosts. Dining the course ot his sermon at Si. John's Anglican Church, Dannevrrke, on Sunday evening, the Rev. J. A. McNickle made relereuce to the pledge-breaking which had gone on in the last session ot Parliament, tie was speaking of the tine character of Dlijah, a man who brooked no compromise, and contrasted it with that ot New Zealanders. At the Magistrate’s Court yesterday morning, J. W. Williams was brought forward on a charge of attempting to commit suicide and pleaded guilty and was convicted and discharged. At the Magistrate’s Court yesterday judgment for plaintiffs was entered up in the following undeleuded civil cases ;—C. H. Collins v. N. Heta, claim £4 15s 6d, costs 17s ; G. H. stiles v. John Morgan £1 183 sd, costs 13s, same v. John Kinley, 19s 6d, costs 10s; same v. M. Connolly, £1 14s 2d, costs 12s; same v. Oakley, £1 14s 4d costs X2S, and W. D. Bauckham v. John Morgan, 14s 6d, costs rßs.
On Saturday afternoon next, at 2.30 o’clock, a public demonstration of the celebrated Galvo Syndicate Ltd.’s fire extinguisher \yill take place in the section opposite the Manawatu Hotel. Messrs P. Henuessy and Co. have been appointed local agents for this famous fire extinguisher, which should be kept iu every home as a safeguard against insipieut fires. The demonstration should attract a large gathering. On Tuesday last, at Palmerston, an old resident and sterling pioneer iu the person of Mr Charles Hunt, celebrated his eightieth birthday. Mr Hunt is a Gloustershire man, and arrived iu New Zealand in the ship Alma in 1857. Mr Hunt resided in and about Wellington for several years. Iu 1864 he weut to live iu the Rangitikei district, having purchased a farm adjacent to Martou. He resided there until about ten years ago, when he retired trom active work and went to live in Palmerston, Mr Hunt was an enthusiastic volunteer in his younger days, having served in the colonial forces tor eleven years. Mr Hunt has nine children (six sous and three daughters), forty-eight grandchildren, and twenty-eight great-grandchildren living.
