BOWLING.
The semi-final for the Stiles trophy was played yesterday when Whibley (hdep. 1) 24, defeated Hopper (hdep. 5) 15. For the Toms Ferns, the challengers, Messrs Harvey, Spring, Rimmer and Witchell (skip.) defeated the holders, Messrs Barber, Speirs, Walker and Munro (skip) by 26 to 17. Mr Stunell’s rink has challenged the holders for next Wednesday. Mesdames Hamer and Walker provided afternoon tea. At the pavilion yesterday the secretary read the balance-sheet of the recent carnival, which disclosed a profit of nearly more than sufficient to pay for the erection of the pavilion. On the motion of Messrs Henuessy and Hornblow, the ladies were accorded a vote of thanks for the great assistance rendered, Mr Witchell informed the club yesterday that he would be unable to continue the secretarial duties after the annual meeting . The loss ot such an able and efficient officer will be keenly felt by the club, which owes its existence to the careful engineering and enthusiasm oi Mr Witchell.
