ENCAMPMENT INCIDENT.
SENTRY BAYONETS THREE PRIVATES.
Auckland, Sunday. At the Third Regiment camp on Friday night three privates made good their way through the lines alter “lights out” to visit a neighbouring orchard. Returning they were challenged in the darkness by the sentry, but determined to endeavour to regain their tent undeleted.
The sentry bad high notion of duty and carried out the letter of his instructions.
He called the men to halt and when they did not obey he used the bayonet on all three. One received a bayonet wound beside the left eye, another a wound below the jaw and a third was run through the back of the thigh. The men were taken to the hospital. Their wounds are not considered serious.
Later.
A later message states that only one man was injured, and that not seriously. It is further stated that his injuries were not caused by the sentry intentionally using his bayonet. The sentry chased a number of men, colliding with one of them, and the bayonet grazed one man’s face, causing a superficial cut in front of the left ear.
