“HEROES” SENT TO GAOE

There were two further arrests this morning for failure to pay fines inflicted for breaches of the Defence Act. Ed ward Harry Edwards was taken to Eytteltou to work out the alternative of twenty one days’ imprisonment. Walter James Hooper was taken in charge for a similar term.
Fines were imposed this morning on another batch of youths charged with failure to obey the Defence Act. Giving reserved judgment in the cases in which conscience and religious objections were raised, Mr Bailey, S.M., said the question of religion did not arise till the men were put to service. It was the duty of everyone to register and take the oath, but the defence authorities could consider religious oejections. Eight fines were imposed. Counsel for the defence indicated that an aupeal was probable.
