Yesterday alternoon another match was played at the Beach between an eleven from Foxton and Mr Cleland’s team, and after an interesting game the visitors succeeded in turning the tables on the seasiders, being victorious by 16 runs on the first innings. Foxton batted first and knocked up 59 of which ex-New Zealand rep. Redgrave contributed 27 not out. Cleland and Young shared the bowling honours. The bowling of Howe and Cook proved too good for the Beach batsmen and they were all disposed of for 43. At the conclusion of the game both teams adjourned to Bangley’s boardinghouse, where refreshments were dispensed. The match to decide which team is to hold “the ashes” will be played at the Beach next Wednesday afternoon. The fourth test match between England and Australia was completed on Tuesday, resulting in a runaway victory for the Englishmen by an innings and 225 runs. By this win the Englishmen have regained “ the ashes,” having won three of the four tests played. The result of this last game leaves no doubt as to which is' the better team, the Australians being hopelessly outclassed. Although the Englishmen’s score in their innings of the last test beat the previous best aggregate for a test match it was not so much their skill in this branch of the game that chiefly contributed to the Australians downfall as the bowling of Foster, Barnes, Douglas and Co. which the Australian batsmen appirently lound almost unplayable. When a team, which includes such batsmen as Bardsle)', Trumper, Armstrong, Hill, Ransford and Minuett, is disposed of for scores of 191 and 173, it must be apparent to all that the bowling is somewhat above the ordinary. Now that the question as to who shall hold ” the ashes ” has been decided, interest in the final test will be lost to a very large extent.
On Saturday a team from Levin will visit Foxtou and play a match on the Park pitch. The team to represent Foxtou will be selected from the following : Death, Bowe, Redgrave, Cook, Rore, Howe (2), Kdlin, Knewstub, Lumsden, Gascoigne, Toki and Andrew. Any of the above players unable to take part in the match are requested to notify Mr Redgrave at once.
