PALMERSTON AND RONGOTEA.

The matter of getting improved means of communication between Palmerston North and Rongotea was discussed at the meeting of the Council of the Palmerston Chamber of Commerce on Monday night, attention being drawn to the question by Mr Hodder, who stated that the gieater portion of the Rongotea trade was being captured by Feilding. Rongotea was one of the most fertile districts in the country, tweuty-five to lllty acres being sufficient for a man to live one. Yet the farmers had no means of getting to Palmerston unless they drove or rode. The question of running a tram to Rongotea was then raised. Mr Tasker slated that he believed it would be a good investment for a private company, as he was convinced it would pay.

Mr Haydon stated they would have to get the co operation of the County Councils in the matter, otherwise they might experience some difficulty. The Mayor suggested that they endeavour to do something definite in the matter, and call a public meeting with a view to going into it fully and perhaps forming a private company to run motor ’busses out. It was resolved that the chairman procure all possible inlormalion in regard to the question, and that it be discussed at a subsequent meeting.
