GARDEN FETE.

A very happy and successful Garden Fete was held at All Saints’ vicarage yesterday. At 3 p.m. the vicar performed the opening ceremony, but before doing so said he regretted very much that the Mayor was unable to be present. He then read a letter from Mr Stiles, apologising for his absence and wishing the effort every success, and enclosing a very handsome donation. The letter was received with acclamation. The vicar then said that the object ot the Garden Fete was to raise funds for the preservation of the church property. Church people were the landlord, and it was lor them to take care of the church buildings in their generation, and hand them on in good order to the next generation. The requirements at present were numerous, but chiefly the painting of the Sunday school, Church and vicarage.

The attendance both alteruoou and evening was very good, considering the numerous counter attractions.

The stall-holders were as follows :—Guild stall, Mrs A. S. Easton and Mrs Jeuks; sweets stall, Mrs J) Robinson, Mrs Bo>es, and Miss Symons ; flower stall, Mrs C. Robinson and Miss Collins ; Christmas tree, Mrs Barber and the Misses Maroui ; tea tent, Mrs Nye and helpers ; produce stall, Misses Coley. Other willing helpers were ; Competitions, Mrs W. S. Stewart, whose “ proverb ” and “authors ” competitions created great interest ; nail-driving, Mr W. Nickels, who was indefatigable ; gramaphone, Mr Betty, the items being much appreciated ; Messrs A. S. Easton, Guilder, Nye, Holliugton, Kellovv, Boyes, and R. Bright, who attended to the numerous organisations, and with the secretary, Mr F. Woods, did all they could to make the effort a success.

In the evening the local bras* band added greatly to the enjoyment by playing suitable items, and some ot the Motuiti Maoris sang with great effect two Maori hymns. The winners ot the competitions were : Pair 01 boots given by Mr R. T. Betty, Mrs Cunuiugbame and Mr R. Bright both guessing the same number ; doll, given by Mrs Podmore, Mr S. Dudson ; authors competition, Mrs Boyes; proverb competition, Mrs Greig ; uail-driviug, Mrs C. Robinson, Miss E. Alzdorf, and Miss Elvie Alzdorf. The committee wish to thank all those who so kindly helped to make the undertaking a success, and specially Mr Bock, for providing a tent for lea rooms.

Donations in money were sent by the Mayor, Mrs C. Symons, and Mr A. Jouson.

The gross takings were ,£45 6s 4d. and the expenses are small.
