BRUTAL ASSAULT.
ON A POSTMISTRESS.
We have received information that a brutal assault was committed upon Mrs Keruihan, postmistress at Kiwilea, a few miles from Feildiug, at an early hour yesterday morning. It appears that a man called at the house, which is occupied by Mrs Kernihan and her maid, and demanded the keys of the Post Office. Upon being refused the man set upon the defenceless woman and a struggle ensued. The maid ran to a neighbour’s for assistance. When assistance arrived Mrs Kernihan was found in an insensible condition in the garden and the man had decamped. Dr. Wills and Sergeant Bowden were communicated with and were quickly on the scene. Mrs Kernihan’s injuries were of such a nature that she had to be removed to a private hospital in Feilding. Among other bodily injuries it was found that her arm is broken.
The police are very reticent over the matter.
It is thought that Mrs Kernihau’s injuries will not be of a permanent nature.
