BOYS AND BILLIARD SALOONS.
At Tuesday night’s meeting the Palmerston Borough Couuci" Cr Nathan stated that there ought to be some by-law with regard to the age at which young boys should be allowed in billiard saloons. He was not opposed to racing or billiards, but he did think something should be done to keep boys of 15 or 16 years of age from entering the saloons. If anyone wished lor an object lesson in regard to the matter, they had only to visit some of the saloons in town. There was also the fact that hotels were compelled to close at tea o’clock, while the billiard saloons were allowed to keep open till 11 o’clock, and this, too, might be taken into consideration. Cr Clausen stated that he had been informed on very good authority that boys of ten years and upwards frequented the saloons, and not only played but were in the habit of betting on the games.
Cr Mowlem corroborated the statements made.
On the motion of Cr Haydon, it was decided to write to other towns in New Zealandd with a view to ascertaining at what age boys were allowed in the saloons.
