A LIVELY HOME-COMING.
Auckland, January 13
The Auckland Star’s correspondent at Rotorua states that there was no patty of natives to welcome the Maori troupe of entertainers when the express arrived last evening. The returning natives proceeded to Whaka by special ’bus, and there a hostile demonstration, which proceeded from heated words to blows, followed their arrival. In trying to protect Maggie Papakura from a blow, one of the party had an arm broken in three places, while the old Meta Taupopoki had his head cut open with a stick. A general melee followed, but no further serious casualties are reported.
A feeling of hostility among the natives at Rotorua against the leaders who were responsible for the band journeying to England has been steadily growing, and it culminated last evening in the fracas, which was a distinctly unpleasant form of reception after a year’s absence.
