TOWN CLERK’S REPORT.
The Town Clerk submitted the following report on the workings of the borough for the past month at last night’s Council meeting
“ In accordance with the resolution passed by the Council on December nth, the crown of Main street has been tarred and sanded, also the various crossings. The concrete floor beneath the Town Hall dressing rooms has been laid down by the Borough men in a very satisfactory manner, and the approach trom the passage to the urinal has also been concreted. Several holes in various roads have been filled with metal, and the water channels in Main street cleaned out twice in the month. The men also put in some days’ labour for the gas works, Cooke eight days, Huntley ten days. They have now commenced to cut the cemetery grass. "F. W. Gardes reports that he has given the horse obtained by Councillor Coley a fair trial, and is quite satisfied with him. The horse is six years old, thoroughly staunch, quiet, and a good walker, and well suited for the work required of him.
‘‘Two rooms and the passage at the poundkeepers' cottage have been re-papered, also two rooms at the cottage in Frances street. “ The picture shows at the Town Hall continue to be well patronised, and show no signs of tailing attendances on the part of the public. Mr McArtuey, the caretaker, has applied to me, as manager, for an increase of salary. He points out that he was induced to put in a low application on the understanding that it the venture was a success he was to receive an increased salary, and also that he could reasonably expect a certain revenue from bill posting, but owing to the popularity of the pictures no shows are coming—two only in three months, and no signs of any others. In view of these and other reasons, I therefore recommend that his salary be increased to £l2O per annum. “ The library has now been increased by the addition of one hundred and thirty-three new books, which were chosen at a special meeting of the ifibrary Committee held on Friday, 15th December. The new bootrs have been placed in a separate piace by themselves, and are easily accessible to subscribers.
The report was adopted with the exception thac the half care taker’s salary was raised 10 ;£ioo per annum instead of ,£l2O as recommended.
