At the local Police Court this morning, before Mr Horublow J.P., C.'Williams was fined £,l or 48 hours imprisonment on a second charge of drunkenness. Mr G. H. Stiles, the retiring Vice-President of the Primitive Methodist Conference, accompanied by the Rev. Mr Coatsworth, left Foxton this afternoon to attend the annual conference which opens at Christchurch tomorrow.

Phenominally cold weather is being experienced in Canada and the United States. The temperature is at zero throughout Mississippi Valley. The thermometer at Winnipeg is fifty below zero. Telegraph lines are wrecked and the western towns are cut off from communication with the outside world. To-morrow All Saints Sun day School will hold their annual picnic at the residence of Mr Walter Barber at Motuiti. The conveyances will leave the church at 10 a.m. Mr W. Nye has kindly lent two drays, Mr Podmore has provided a coach and Messrs Collins, Coley and Cook each a dray. We trust the little ones will have a bright and happy day. At last night’s Council meeting the gas manager reported upon the working of the gas works for the month of December as follows : —Gas in holder on November 30th, 2,000 ft. ; gas manufactured during the month, 266,300 ft,, giving a total of 268,300 ft. The gas in holder on December 31st was 5,000 ft. Gas sold to consumers, 189,000; used in street lamps, 31,000 ft. ; works, 300,oooit.; manager’s house, 1,400 ft. ; and unaccauuted for, u,9001t. Major Rowley, Provincial Secretary of the Salvation Army, was in Foxton yesterday making arrangements for the starting of the Army in Foxton, The first services will be held in Main Street on Saturday evening next and will be conducted by Major Rowley, assisted by Captain Miss Pike and other officers. Services will also be held on Sunday in the Masonic Hall at ix, 3 and 7 o’clock. These will be preceded by open-air meetings. The Foxton corps will be in charge of Captain Pike assisted by Lieutenant Young.

In connection with the Horowhenua A. and P. Show, to be held at Levin on the 31st of this mouth, Mr J. R. McDonald has donated a silver cup valued at ,£lO 10s, for the champion hack on the ground. This generous gilt should be the means of horses competing from all parts of the Island, for the honour of having the best hack. All entries for the show close next Saturday, the 13th iust., with the secretary at Levin. Those who have not a schedule can obtain one from this office.

Damage to the extent of about £5 was done to a coach belonging to Mr A. F. Chamberlain yesterday through a person showing his ability as a driver of a bullock waggon. The waggon and oxen were drawn up near the Family Hotel, and the driver was temporarily absent, when another man came along, and in order to show his powers as a driver he picked up the whip and set the bullocks in motion. The waggon ran into the coach, which was standing in front of the stable, and dragged it along for about a chain, breaking one of the wheels and otherwise damaging it.
