FOXTON STATE SCHOOL

BREAKING-UP C K R IS M O N Y

AND PRIZE GIVING

The breaking-up ceremony and prize distribution iu connection with the local State school took place yesterday afternoon. There was a fair attendance of parents and the prize-giving ceremony took place iu the quadrangle. The Chairman of Committee apologised for the absence of Mr Pirani and called upon Dr. Maudl to present the prizes. Dr. Maudl in his address to the children, referred to the importance of moulding the character. He urged the children to be truthful, as the untruthful child soon lost the respect of companions and elders. He He urged them to be courageous, physically and morally and, he added, “ Never peach on a pal.” Thirdly, he said, they should observe cleanliness of body and mind. He said there should be swimming baths erected in connection with all large schools (applause) and he saw no reason why a swimming bath should not be erected in connection with the school. He felt confident that the townspeople would respond liberally to such a deserving object and personally he would render assistance to this end. He referred to the improvements which had been effected to the grounds and the well-kept garden plots which reflected credit upon the committee, teaching staff and pupils. He congratulated the prize winners and also spoke encouragingly to those who had not been so successful, but they had the satisfaction of knowing they had done their best. He also paid a tribute to the interest which the local Horticultural Society had taken in the pupils’ gardens. The prizes were then distributed. Mr Jacksou thanked all those who had contributed prizes and other gilts. Mr Horublow referred to the good work done by the pupils during the year and the harmony which existed between the teachers and committee. He hoped those scholars who were severing their connection with the school would benefit and prosper as a result of the foundation laid at the school. Cheers were given for the teaching staff and committee, and an adjournment was made to the play ground where races of all descriptions were indulged iu. LIST OF prizes. Standard VI.
