The Manawatu Herald. Tuesday, December 5, 1911. NOTES AND COMMENTS.
Foxton is to be congratulated upon the splendid reputation it has gained in respect to its orderly public meetings. The police have not been called upon to eject any noisy ones, and those who have attended tne meetings have not been treated to any scenes of hooliganism. There are only two more meetings to ’ be held before the first ballot —one to-night, to be addressed by Mr Field and one to-morrow night, to be addressed by Mr Brown. That these gentlemen will receive a patient hearing goes without saying, provided the personal element is religiously eschewed. Interjections cannot be avoided and if these are taken in the right spirit and without any show of temper, peace will prevail. In any case, question time is the proper place lor those anxious to know the mind of the candidate upon points that have not been made quite clear in the address. However, we don’t anticipate any trouble for the final bouts, because Foxton audiences are lovers of British fair play.
We are informed that liquor has been sent out to a number of the llaxmills in this district for free distribution among the employees. One miller informs us that as a
result, work at his mill was completely disorganised yesterday. It is a pity that the electoral law does nut deal with this degrading form of corruption except on election day. Whoever is responsible for this shameless practice should remember that the majority of llaxmill hands resent this insult to their intelligence. The day has gone by when men’s votes — except in rare cases—can be purchased for a bottle of whisky.
