CITIZENS’ BALL.

The Citizens’ Ball, held last night in the Municipal Town Hall, was not as great a success as was anticipated, the attendance no doubt being considerably effected by the unlavourabie weather during the day, visitors expected from the surrounding districts being kept away by the threatening appearance of the elements. Nevertheless, those who put in an appearance had an enjoyable time. The local brass band discoursed spirited selections in (rout of the Hall previous to the commencement of the dancing. The programme com menced with the Grand March, to the accompaniment of the brass hand, which was arranged on the stage. The number of fancy dresses was somewhat small, but they were sufficiently in evidence to break the monotony of the usual attire and to lend a charm to the appearance ot the assembled dancers. About 70 couples were present, and excellent music was supplied by Berthold’s orchestraaud Conlan’s baud. Extras were kindly contributed by Mr Peter Robinson and Master Herb. Perrean. Cold drinks were supplied in plenty, and the catering of Mr M. Perreau was worthy of his reputation in this direction. The M’s.C., Messrs Peter Robinson, T. Curtis, Bert. Dunn and Rout, carried out their duties faithfully. Those in fancy dress were as follow ;—Mrs A. Smith, “Sultan’s Favourite ” ; Mrs Rout, “ French Fishwife “ : Mrs G. King. “Maori Chieftainess ’’ ; Mrs Cunningham, “Ruination”: Miss V. Walls, “Spanish Dancer”; Dorris Spiers, “Poppy”; Miss Glendinning, “Carmen”; Mr C. Dudley, “ Toreador.” The secretary, Mr P, Lumsdeu, and his committee were successful in making the function a thorough social success, and although it was the desire of the promoters of this dance to have a substantial surplus to forward to the Palmerston Hosoital, the receipts will unfortunately be very little more than the expenses. The thanks ol the committee are due to Coulan’s Band for supplying music gratis.
